The United States Mission in the Lao People's Democratic Republic has issued a public service announcement for American citizens living or traveling in Laos. The announcement concerns Typhoon Wipha, which is expected to make landfall in northern Lao provinces between Tuesday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 23.

The Mekong River Commission has warned of high risks of flash floods in Luang Prabang. Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated across several areas including Phongsaly, Xiengkhuang, Luangnamtha, Vientiane, Oudomxay, Luangprabang, Xaysomboun, Bolikhamxay, Khammuane, Savannakhet, Attapeu, Sekong, and Champasak.

American citizens are advised to avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding and stay informed about developments through news updates. They should take precautions to protect themselves and their families by checking emergency kits for necessary medicines and supplies. It is also important to safeguard important documents such as passports and keep family members informed about safety and welfare.

For assistance during this time, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy Vientiane at +856-21-487-600 or +1 301-985-8789 ext. 7600. An emergency after-hours telephone number is also available: +856-21-487-000. Additionally, inquiries can be sent via email to CONSLAO@state.gov.

The embassy encourages enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates and following them on Facebook for more information.
