Cairo – In response to a request from the Egyptian government, USAID and the Ministry of Health and Population have initiated a family planning program aimed at addressing Egypt's rapid population growth. This initiative aligns with efforts by Egyptian leaders, including President Sisi, to address overpopulation as a challenge to national development.
The program was launched by USAID Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin and Minister of Health and Population Dr. Ahmed Emad Rady. It is part of the U.S. government's commitment to support Egypt's economic and social progress.
USAID will provide technical assistance and training to enhance the Ministry's Family Planning and Reproductive Health Program. The goal is to increase demand for family planning services, improve service quality, boost contraceptive use, and reduce fertility rates over time. The five-year initiative involves a $19 million investment across nine governorates in Upper Egypt as well as areas in Cairo and Alexandria.
During the launch event, Sherry F. Carlin stated, “We know that USAID family planning programs have made tremendous impact in the past. We stand poised again to be a part of the solution to the rapid growth in Egypt’s fertility rate.”
For nearly four decades, USAID has collaborated with Egyptians on health initiatives including maternal and child health, nutrition, immunization, disease prevention activities alongside family planning efforts. This new program is part of a broader $30 billion investment by American people through USAID since 1978.
