Exactech, based in Gainesville FL, recently carried out its first surgery in the United Arab Emirates and rolled out its GPS navigation software. The addition is intended to leverage the company’s Active Intelligence® slate through the use of Exact echGPS® and the Equinoxe® Planning App.
“By eliminating the capital purchase process, Exactech is democratizing data for orthopaedic surgeons all around the world with increased availability to powerful technologies that can help improve patient outcomes,” Dr. Muh, an Exactech consultant who frequently engages in philanthropic travel to the UAE, said. “It's exciting to see Exactech continue to bring this clinically beneficial technology to markets around the world."
Specializing in implants, instrumentation and technologies for joint replacement surgery, Exatech gathered 200 surgeons at its Shoulder Masters Course in Amsterdam to celebrate its latest release.
An updated software is scheduled to launch for surgeons based in the EMEA and APAC following the success of its first operation.
The reverse total shoulder arthroplasty surgery was performed by UAE-based British orthopedic and trauma surgeon, Ved Goswami, MD, of Medclinic City Hospital using Exatech’s navigation system. U.S. shoulder and elbow surgeon, Stephanie Muh, MD, of Henry Ford Health assisted with the operation.
“ExactechGPS is designed to dramatically improve accuracy,” Dr. Goswami said. “The human eye allows implant placement by even the most experienced surgeons, to within 3 to 5 millimeters. However, with the guidance of GPS technology, more precise implant placement, within 1-2 mm, is possible."
While the U.S. release of v2.2 includes a new web upload feature designed to develop a reconstruction of shoulder CT scans, the launch in the EMEA and APAC includes user interface improvements and visualization tools, final implant placement verification, an integration with Exactech’s Ergo shoulder instrumentation and wireless transmissions of case reports.
“ExactechGPS is a foundational technology that powers Exactech’s Active Intelligence suite,” a recent press release states. “The company steadily expands this portfolio of uniquely accessible smart solutions that support orthopaedic surgeons in and out of the operating room.”
