North Carolina-based tech company Honeywell has partnered with FREYR Battery in Norway to provide energy storage solutions.
As announced Jan. 19, Honeywell is expected to acquire 19 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery cells produced by FREYR from 2023 until 2030, a news release said. The new collaboration will give FREYR access to Honeywell’s leading technology offerings, which include integrated automation, field instrumentation and security integration solutions in their manufacturing process.
“Battery storage will play a crucial role as organizations transition to clean power generation,” FREYR CEO Tom Einar Jensen said in the release. “Honeywell is an ideal partner with world-class teams, technology and industrial expertise, and our shared commitment to decarbonizing the global energy systems sector will serve as the foundation for our continued work together. Today’s announcement is also an important milestone as we advance to a potential H1 (first half of the business year) 2022 Final Investment Decision (“FID”) on our first Gigafactory in Mo i Rana, Norway.”
Utilizing both companies' resources, the partnership will serve to provide smart energy storage solutions that will be able to address a wide variety of needs for commercial and industrial customers alike, the release said. Based out of Norway, FREYR will be responsible for leveraging manufacturing capacity in Europe as well as in the United States.
“Introducing decarbonized storage solutions at scale across multiple geographic markets is vital to our continued sustainability efforts and, in turn, helps to make renewable energy accessible and efficient,” Ujjwal Kumar, president and CEO, Honeywell Process Solutions, said. “This collaboration will pair FREYR’s next-generation battery solutions with Honeywell’s 20 years of lithium-ion battery industry know-how and established routes to markets and customers.”
Headquartered in Charlotte, Honeywell is dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality within its operations and facilities by 2035. Through its collaboration with FREYR, the company is expected to sharply reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities. Yet another plus is improving on its decades-long history of innovation to help customers achieve their environmental and social goals, the release said.
