Ameresco Inc. has entered into a partnership with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council on a £1.09 million energy conservation project.

According to a news release, the agreement with Ameresco will help the Welsh city, once known as the iron capital of the world, transform into a smart city and modern commercial hub by upgrading aging infrastructure and getting the most out of current equipment while installing solar systems and LED lighting. The agreement will also include smart heating and hot water systems, according to the release.

“With over 100 properties in the council’s portfolio, and an energy spend in buildings of over £1.2 million per year, the potential benefits of this project could be significant,” Judith Jones, chief officer of planning, engineering, estates and neighborhood services at the Merthyr Tydfil Council, said in the news release. “We are delighted to be working with Ameresco as our principal contractor on the project and look forward to optimizing the energy efficiency of our properties, to improve the condition of our schools, reduce carbon emissions and save money.”

According to the news release, Merthyr Tydfil will offer solutions in 31 sites, and once completed the project could save the city £136,000 each year while also cutting carbon emissions from buildings by 251 tons annually.

The move, according to the release, is a key part of the strategy by Merthyr Tydfil to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, as outlined by the Welsh government. The release also notes that another component of the energy overhaul is the improved quality of life for the residents of Merthyr Tydfil, a city in south Wales.

Moreover, the release noted that during a survey, Ameresco followed all COVID-19 safety measures to make sure members of the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council staff were safe.
