Orbital Marine Power and TechnipFMC are collaborating to globalize the market of tidal energy, according to a press release.

Orbital’s custom turbine design accumulates currents of tides, creating renewable electricity. So far, the United Kingdom only has one gigawatt of tidal sites, the press release said. This expansion is designed to fix that.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Orbital in the tidal energy market,” Luana Duffé, executive vice president of New Energy Ventures at TechnipFMC, said. “By combining our system integration capabilities with their technical expertise and differentiated turbine technology, we will scale-up our combined offering to deliver more renewable energy to the market.”

Andrew Scott, chief executive officer of Orbital Marine Power, said: “This TechnipFMC investment is a major endorsement of the tidal energy solution we have developed at Orbital Marine Power, and we are hugely excited to be working with such a leading company in the global offshore energy sector on the commercial rollout of our vision for tidal energy.”

Orbital Marine’s methods to achieve this goal include increasing blade length and overall turbine power. In an interview with Abundance Investment, Scott said he intends to expand until Orbital Marine Power can “significantly decarbonize a portion of the planet."

Besides meeting the growing demand for energy, the collaboration is aimed at reducing the expense of the process.
