Lumen Technologies recently expanded its fiber network infrastructure in Europe in response to rising demand for high-speed broadband service and cloud technology.

The goal of this expansion is to improve service to customers in Switzerland, France and Spain, the company said in a press release. Lumen recently laid a fiber route over 180 miles long, connecting three French cities between Lyon, France and Geneva, Switzerland – Grenoble, Chambéry and Annecy, the company said.

In Spain, Lumen has completed a network ring of fiber connections between the city of Salou and the French border.

"Our new fiber infrastructure investments in Europe demonstrate the continued commitment that Lumen has to this market, and to powering the next wave of growth and innovation for customers in the 4th Industrial Revolution," Annette Murphy, Lumen Technologies managing director for EMEA, said in the release.

The new improved fiber network brings lower broadband latency, faster internet connections and enhanced user security, the company said.

"Companies are facing new challenges that require them to harness massive amounts of data at almost unimaginable speeds," Murphy said. "The agile, reliable and secure Lumen network helps customers to leverage their data and adopt next-gen apps to unleash their business potential and deliver amazing digital experiences."

In Europe, approximately 38,000 kilometers of fiber in Lumen's network connects more than 2,000 on-net buildings and 500 public and private third-party data centers, the company said. Globally, the company uses roughly 720,000 kilometers of fiber, connecting more than 180,000 on-net buildings and 2,200 public and private third-party data centers.

The Lumen network connects to cloud services provided by Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
