The U.S. Embassy in Ecuador has issued an updated travel advisory for U.S. citizens on October 14, 2025, maintaining the country at Level 2—meaning travelers should exercise increased caution. While the overall advisory level remains unchanged, a "terrorism" risk indicator has been added to the warning.
The updated summary states that travelers should "exercise increased caution in Ecuador due to risk of crime, terrorism, unrest, and kidnapping." It further explains that some areas within the country have higher risks than others.
According to the advisory: "Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador. Violent crime typically associated with narcotrafficking is common. It includes murder, assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery. Areas with transnational criminal organizations see much higher rates of violent crime. U.S. citizens and LPRs have been victims of kidnapping and extortion."
On terrorism risks in Ecuador, the advisory notes: "There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Ecuador. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s country reports on terrorism to learn more."
Certain regions are now listed as Level 4—"Do Not Travel" zones—due to heightened threats from terrorism and crime. The embassy advises: "Do not travel to these areas for any reason due to terrorism and crime." In these locations, both transnational criminal groups and local gangs are active.
Other areas are categorized as Level 3—"Reconsider Travel." The advisory states: "Reconsider travel to these areas due to terrorism and crime," citing recent increases in violence linked to terrorist and other criminal organizations.
The embassy also cautions that its ability to provide emergency services may be limited in certain parts of Ecuador because of security concerns.
U.S. citizens planning travel to Ecuador are encouraged to review all relevant safety information provided by the embassy before departure.
