On October 14, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Malawi issued a security alert for U.S. citizens throughout the country. The embassy warned that transportation hubs such as minibus stops and large bus depots have recently experienced violent incidents related to groups competing for control of transportation resources. These locations are now considered higher risk areas where harassment or violence could occur.

The alert advises U.S. government personnel to avoid these transportation hubs. It also recommends that all U.S. citizens stay away from such areas if possible and remain vigilant when in their vicinity, whether as passengers or bystanders.

The embassy provided several safety tips, including being aware of surroundings, maintaining a low profile, not resisting robbery attempts, and traveling in groups when possible.

For assistance, the embassy listed contact information for both business hours and after-hours emergencies. It also encouraged Americans in Malawi to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates through its website at https://mw.usembassy.gov.
