The U.S. Embassy in Malawi has announced an open auction of generators to be held on October 4, 2025. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Area 10, Plot Number 668, Off Blantyre Street. Viewing of the items is scheduled for October 1 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Registration for the auction will occur only during the viewing day. Participants must present their National Identification Cards to complete registration.

A deposit of MWK 500,000 is required from all bidders before the auction date. This payment must be made electronically by Thursday, October 2. Prospective bidders are instructed to contact cashier Cecilia Lipende at LipendeC@state.gov for bank account details necessary for the transfer. According to the embassy’s instructions, "For successful bidders, this deposit will be applied toward the final purchase price, with the balance payable on the day of the auction. Unsuccessful bidders will receive a full refund of their deposit within two weeks, using the same payment method originally used."

Successful bidders are expected to pay in cash on-site after winning and have one hour to complete their payment with an on-premises cashier.

Purchased generators can be collected immediately after payment upon presentation of a receipt. All generators must be picked up no later than 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) will attend the auction site to collect taxes due on each purchased generator.

The embassy notes that "No person will be allowed to register on the day of the auction," and only those registered during viewing times may enter on auction day. For electronic payments made at or after the event, collection can only proceed once confirmed by a cashier during regular workdays.
