U.S. Commander of Special Operations Command Africa, Maj. Gen. Claude K. Tudor Jr., visited Algiers on September 14 for a meeting with Lieutenant General Mostefa Smaali, the Algerian Commander of Land Forces. This marks the first visit by a high-level U.S. military delegation to Algeria since January 2025, when the Commander of U.S. Africa Command traveled to sign a military cooperation memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

Algeria is recognized as a key regional actor in counterterrorism and efforts against organized crime, and it collaborates with neighboring states to improve their security capabilities. The ongoing cooperation between the U.S. and Algerian militaries demonstrates both nations' commitment to enhancing regional and international peace and stability through continued strategic dialogue.

Maj. Gen. Tudor assumed command of Special Operations Command Africa in June 2025. In this position, he oversees all U.S. special operations activities across Africa and leads over 1,900 personnel from the U.S., interagency partners, and allied militaries operating in 19 countries throughout Africa and Europe.
