Chargé d’Affaires Jonathan Fischer welcomed back Malawi’s 2025 YALI Mandela Washington Fellows on September 4. The fellows completed a six-week program focused on professional and leadership development in the United States, where they received training in business, civic leadership, and public management. These areas are considered important for Malawi’s ongoing development efforts.

Upon their return, the fellows are expected to share what they have learned with others in Malawi. Chargé Fischer highlighted the significance of the fellowship, stating, “We are honored to see how participants in this program leverage their experiences in the United States to create the change they want to see in their communities here in their home country.”

The Mandela Washington Fellowship has been sponsored by the U.S. since 2014 and has provided training for more than 7,000 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa. Of these, 177 have come from Malawi.
