Typhoon season has commenced in Japan and is anticipated to continue through November 2025. Each year, several typhoons hit various regions of the country, posing significant risks. U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Japan are advised to monitor these weather patterns closely and adhere to local government emergency instructions.

Historically, infrastructure damage from typhoons has stranded U.S. citizens, causing travel delays due to airport disruptions, limited flights, halted public transportation, or road closures.

To stay informed about typhoon warnings, individuals can refer to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Honolulu, the National Weather Service’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center, and the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo – Typhoon Center.

The Japanese government's "J-Alert" system provides early warning alerts available via mobile apps in English. The Japan Tourism Organization’s Safety tips app delivers disaster alerts in multiple languages including English. Additionally, the NHK World TV app offers government emergency alerts through its "Push Notification" service in English. Both apps disseminate "J-Alerts" directly to mobile devices. More details on Emergency Preparedness for Americans in Japan can be found on the U.S. Embassy Tokyo’s website.

Residents or travelers in storm-prone areas should prepare by assembling a kit with bottled water, non-perishable food items, medications, and important documents stored securely. Emergency shelters may offer only basic resources with limited medical and food supplies available.

U.S. citizens throughout Japan are encouraged to follow reliable local media sources and heed instructions from authorities when preparing for storms.

Enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is recommended for receiving security messages and facilitating location tracking during emergencies.
