Following consultations in Washington, Chargé d’Affaires John T. McNamara arrived in Medellin to address concerns regarding recent rhetoric and actions by the Colombian government. He emphasized the risk these pose to the historically close partnership between the United States and Colombia.
McNamara stated that the U.S. would continue efforts to curb illegal migration, address trade issues, counter narcotics flow, bring traffickers to justice, and enhance regional security with American interests as a priority.
Despite policy differences, McNamara acknowledged Colombia as a crucial strategic partner in Latin America. He expressed a desire for a positive future relationship aimed at enhancing safety and prosperity for both nations.
Reflecting on his experiences serving in Colombia, McNamara noted the bravery of Colombians in defending democracy. He voiced concern over the current state of U.S.-Colombia relations and stressed the need for mutual effort to strengthen ties.
He looks forward to discussions with Colombian officials about specific steps sought by the Trump Administration to reverse negative trends in bilateral relations and prevent further escalation detrimental to both countries' interests.
