Siemens has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to enhance the interoperability of IoT systems for buildings. The integration between Siemens' Building X and Microsoft's Azure IoT Operations is expected to reduce integration efforts by up to 80 percent, leading to optimized building operations and improved sustainability.
The solution represents one of the first integrations of IoT data based solely on open standards across different providers. Susanne Seitz, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings, stated, “This collaboration with Microsoft reflects our shared vision of enabling customers to harness the full potential of IoT through open standards and interoperability.” She emphasized that improved data access will offer portfolio managers detailed insights into critical metrics like energy efficiency and consumption. Seitz noted that this level of transparency is crucial for industries aiming to optimize building operations and achieve sustainability goals.
Erich Barnstedt, Senior Director & Architect at Microsoft's Corporate Standards Group, commented on the partnership: “Siemens shares Microsoft’s focus on interoperability and open IoT standards. This collaboration is a significant step forward in making IoT data more actionable.” He added that Microsoft's strategy highlights their commitment to working with industry leaders to provide customers with greater choice and control over their IoT solutions.
The interoperability between Siemens’ Building X and Azure IoT Operations is set to be available in the market from the second half of 2025. Building X is a digital platform designed to help customers digitalize, manage, and optimize their building operations, supporting sustainable and autonomous asset management. It forms part of Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform aimed at accelerating digital transformation.
