The U.S. Mission in Kampala is now accepting applications for the 2026 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program award in partnership with the University of Notre Dame. This program will provide funding for two African university faculty, administrators, and research institute professionals to conduct postdoctoral research or engage in curriculum development and research during the 2026-2027 academic year. Applications must be submitted online by June 7, 2025.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to focus their submissions on specific themes such as sustainability, resilience, mitigation and adaptation; peacebuilding, including peace processes, religion and peacebuilding, and the role of new technologies; global health topics like WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), nutrition, and maternal health; or language curriculum development aimed at fostering global citizenship among students.
Applications will be considered for either Research Grants or Program and Curriculum Development Grants. Research Grants are awarded for three to nine months, requiring a Ph.D., a productive scholarly record, and a detailed project statement relevant to ongoing teaching or research responsibilities. Funding typically covers one semester but may extend if necessary.
Program and Curriculum Development Grants span three to five months. Applicants should propose reading and research projects that benefit both themselves and their home institutions. A doctorate is not required for these grants; however, applicants must possess at least a master’s degree or equivalent.
Applicants must be Ugandan citizens with awards open irrespective of academic discipline, faculty rank, sex, or age. Proposals involving clinical medical research with patient contact are not eligible under the Fulbright Program guidelines. Preference is given to proposals that align with the Fulbright Program's goals of enhancing mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through professional exchange.
Applicants should demonstrate a strong command of English and provide a detailed project statement explaining why their research necessitates being conducted in the United States. Plagiarism will lead to disqualification from the program.
Applications are reviewed locally before final nominations are assessed in the United States by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Scholars are advised to plan travel starting August 2026 or January 2027 to align with U.S. university schedules.
