Ambassador Nicole D. Theriot recently addressed the commissioning ceremony of the Guyana Defence Force Ship (GDFS) Shahoud, marking a significant milestone for the Guyana Defence Force and the nation itself. The event was attended by prominent figures including President Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, and Chief of Defense Staff Brigadier Omar Khan.

In her remarks, Ambassador Theriot highlighted the vessel's namesake, Colonel Michael Shahoud, praising his dedication and service. "Mrs. Shahoud, I can’t think of a more fitting name of this vessel," she stated, acknowledging Colonel Shahoud's lasting legacy within the Coast Guard and military relations between the two nations.

The GDFS Shahoud represents Guyana’s commitment to defense and security amidst its economic growth. The near coastal patrol vessel (NCPV) will enhance maritime patrol capabilities along Guyana's coast and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Ambassador Theriot noted that this development underscores Guyana's dedication to "the rule of law and the rules-based international order."

Manufactured by U.S.-based Metal Shark, the vessel signifies more than just an acquisition; it marks ongoing cooperation between Metal Shark and the GDF Coast Guard in operationalizing this strategic asset. "I would like to thank the Metal Shark team for their commitment to partnering with the Government of Guyana and the GDF," Ambassador Theriot expressed.

The United States Embassy, in coordination with U.S. Southern Command, plans to continue supporting Guyana through expertise, training, education, and security assistance opportunities. Recently approved funding of approximately $1 million will aid in sustaining other vessels and providing USCG-provided training for Guyana’s Coast Guard.

As President Ali and Brigadier Khan work towards transforming Guyana’s defense sector, Ambassador Theriot affirmed that "the United States will continue to work alongside our Caribbean partner" for regional stability and security in the Western Hemisphere.
