USS Forrest Sherman made a routine port visit to Algiers this week, strengthening the ongoing friendship and security cooperation between the United States and Algeria. This three-day visit follows previous stopovers in Algiers and Oran in 2023 and 2024 with USNS Trenton.

During their stay, Algerian naval officers attended a reception aboard the ship. The Algerian Navy hosted U.S. sailors for a friendly soccer match, while the U.S. crew visited touristic sites in Algiers and Tipaza.

"This visit reinforces the commitment to working alongside partners in Algeria to promote ongoing diplomatic efforts which will advance peace and security in the region," stated Cmdr. Andrew Darjany, commanding officer of Forrest Sherman. "The professionalism and dedication of our Sailors were on full display during this visit, and we are proud to represent the United States Navy."

Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin expressed gratitude towards Algerian hosts: "I want to express my deepest gratitude to our colleagues in the Algerian government for hosting the Forrest Sherman, and to the ship’s crew for being here with us." She added, "I believe the possibilities for American-Algerian naval cooperation are nearly limitless. Thank you for coming together to show the friendship and mutual respect between our forces and our people."

Forrest Sherman is recognized as the U.S. Navy’s 48th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, named after Adm. Forrest Sherman, who served as the 12th Chief of U.S. Naval Operations.

Currently deployed within the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, Forrest Sherman operates under a fleet headquartered in Naples, Italy. The U.S. 6th Fleet engages in joint and naval operations alongside allied partners to support U.S. national interests, security, and stability across Europe and Africa.
