U.S. Ambassador to Panama, Kevin Marino Cabrera, recently visited the Darién province, marking his first official trip to the area. The visit highlighted ongoing efforts by the United States and Panama to enhance border security and curb illegal activities in the region.
Ambassador Cabrera and Panama's Minister of Public Security, Juan Manuel Pino Ábrego, inaugurated a new U.S.-funded vehicle maintenance facility in Metetí. This initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Panama’s capabilities against organized crime.
During his visit, Ambassador Cabrera noted that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two nations has led to a significant decrease in illegal immigration through the Darién jungle. He stated that these efforts have resulted in a "99% reduction" in such activities.
In addition to inaugurating the facility, Ambassador Cabrera handed over various equipment and vehicles to Panamanian authorities. This included 16 ruggedized boats with 32 motors, biometric data collection tools, satellite equipment, furniture, pickup trucks, and buses. These contributions are valued at over $3 million and aim to bolster Panama's ability to combat narcotrafficking and illegal immigration.
Ambassador Cabrera emphasized President Trump's role in these initiatives: “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership over the past four months—and the strong commitment of President Mulino—the Darién route is now effectively closed to criminal networks." He further stressed the importance of continued collaboration between both countries.
The ambassador also engaged with representatives from Panama's Ministry of Security, National Aeronaval Service, and SENAFRONT during his visit. These discussions focused on reinforcing security measures across the hemisphere.
