The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton made a port visit to Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, from May 16 to 19. The visit included various activities aimed at enhancing the partnership between the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
During their stay, the crew of USCGC Stratton engaged in technical consultations with PCG personnel to discuss operational best practices. They also participated in community engagements and sports competitions.
Captain Brian Krautler, commanding officer of USCGC Stratton, hosted U.S. Ambassador MaryKay Carlson and PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan for a tour of the vessel on May 16.
Ambassador Carlson remarked on the significance of the visit: “The arrival of the USCGC Stratton is a moment of pride and possibility,” she said. “This is the sixth USCG cutter exchange with the PCG since 2019—a testament to the strength of our bond and the enduring value of our Alliance. These engagements are a priority as they enhance our interoperability and deepen the trust that defines our maritime partnership.”
Two members of PCG joined USCGC Stratton’s transit from Guam for training opportunities at sea. They observed deck operations, engineering drills, and vessel mooring during this period.
Following its departure from Puerto Princesa, USCGC Stratton will engage in an at-sea exercise with both PCG and Philippine Navy forces focusing on maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and marine environmental protection in the Sulu Sea.
Afterward, it will proceed to Japan for participation in a trilateral coast guard exercise involving forces from Japan, Philippines, and United States. This marks their second such joint exercise following one held off Mariveles’ coast in June 2023.
USCGC Stratton operates within U.S. 7th Fleet area alongside regional allies equipped with unmanned aerial systems along with small boats used across varied law enforcement plus rescue missions.
