The U.S. Consulate has provided guidance for those planning to renew their visas, especially in light of upcoming holiday travel plans. Individuals whose visas are expiring soon and are considering a family trip, such as for Thanksgiving, may be eligible for an interview waiver if they fall under certain visa classes.

"Applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for an interview waiver, which allows them to apply for a new visa without being interviewed in person by a consular officer," the consulate states. However, the consular section will need your passport for at least three weeks if you qualify.

It is advised that individuals apply at least three months before their intended travel date. This is particularly important for frequent business travelers and those with family in the United States. Eligibility for a non-immigrant visa is assessed upon arrival of the application at the consular section. Each case is reviewed thoroughly by a consular officer who might ask for additional documentation or require an interview.

The application process begins with completing the DS-160 form. The consulate advises applicants to carefully review their information before submission to ensure accuracy. Even when assisted by others, applicants are responsible for providing truthful and complete information.

Attention should be paid to questions when creating an online profile, including using an accessible email and securing account passwords to track updates and instructions.

Required documents include:

- DS-160 visa application confirmation page

- A valid passport along with any older passports containing previous visas

- One passport-size photo against a white background taken within the last six months

The consulate warns against submitting selfies or photos that have been retouched or do not meet specifications as these will lead to resubmission delays.

Additionally, applicants cannot visit the consular waiting area without an appointment nor submit original documents like marriage or birth certificates—copies suffice since originals will not be returned.

"There are no guarantees that anyone will be issued a visa," warns the consulate, advising against making final travel arrangements until receiving the passport back with the visa included. Expedited processing isn't available through courier submissions.
