China has initiated a dispute with the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) concerning "reciprocal tariffs." This move comes as China alleges that the actions of the United States are not in compliance with its obligations under various international trade agreements.
Specifically, China asserts that the U.S. measures conflict with provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994, the Agreement on Customs Valuation, and the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures.
A formal request for consultations begins the WTO dispute process. These consultations are a platform for the parties involved to discuss the issue and aim to find an agreeable solution without advancing to litigation. If no resolution is achieved within 60 days, the complainant can request a panel to adjudicate the matter.
