Recent reports indicate escalating violence in the remote Bajo Calima region of Valle del Cauca Department, Colombia. Clashes between illegal armed groups and targeted killings have raised fears and displaced some local residents. Additionally, gang-related violence has been reported in the Bella Vista neighborhood of nearby Buenaventura.
The U.S. Embassy has advised its personnel against traveling to these areas due to security concerns. The Embassy's capacity to assist U.S. citizens in emergencies within this region is limited.
U.S. citizens currently in Bajo Calima or Bella Vista are urged to consider leaving because of the unstable security situation. Those unable to leave should take specific precautions, including securing drinkable water, seeking shelter, remaining indoors, avoiding confrontation with armed individuals, maintaining vigilance, being aware of surroundings, keeping a low profile, avoiding crowds, and monitoring local media for updates.
For assistance, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy in Bogota at +57-1-275-2000 or 601-275-2000 and visit their website for more information.
