Ambassador Chung addressed the Rotary Club Joint Meeting at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on March 12, 2025. During her remarks, she highlighted the long-standing relationship between the United States and Sri Lanka since diplomatic relations were established in 1948. The partnership is based on shared values and mutual respect, focusing on democratic principles.

Chung expressed pride in collaborative efforts like English language education and exchange programs that have strengthened ties between the two nations. She noted the significant contributions of programs such as the U.S.-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission and the return of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers to Sri Lankan classrooms.

She praised organizations like Rotary for their role in bridging cultural gaps and fostering community development. "Rotary’s commitment to service, leadership, and community development are reflective of shared values important to Americans and Sri Lankans alike," Chung stated.

The ambassador also discussed economic growth's importance beyond mere numbers, emphasizing its impact on citizens' quality of life. She acknowledged Rotary clubs' contributions to creating a favorable business environment in Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on recent presidential elections in both countries, Chung mentioned President Trump's priorities for making America safer and more prosperous while maintaining international partnerships. "America First does NOT mean America alone," she quoted Trump.

Chung outlined how American companies have historically contributed to innovation in Sri Lanka. She cited MAS Holdings as an example of successful collaboration resulting in mutual benefits for both countries.

She emphasized that enhancing trade with Sri Lanka is crucial for economic growth. The U.S., being Sri Lanka's largest export market, continues to seek improved trade agreements benefiting both nations fairly.

In terms of security cooperation, Chung detailed joint efforts to promote peace across the Indo-Pacific region through maritime cooperation and military engagements with Sri Lankan forces. This includes donations such as King Air maritime patrol aircraft aimed at enhancing regional security capabilities.

Looking forward, Ambassador Chung expressed optimism about continued bilateral cooperation grounded in democratic principles and economic progress: "Together we can address regional security challenges...and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region."
