The United States has extended its congratulations to Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin following his election as the next Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the 2025-2030 term. Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, expressed anticipation in collaborating with Secretary General-elect Ramdin to uphold the OAS’s mission which includes defending democracy and promoting human rights.
Rubio emphasized the importance of a stable and prosperous hemisphere in advancing U.S. priorities aimed at enhancing safety and economic strength. He highlighted the commitment to strengthen alliances with democratic partners to address regional challenges such as illegal migration, transnational crime, and authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
"The United States believes that a stable, secure, and prosperous hemisphere is vital to advancing the Trump Administration’s priorities to make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous," Rubio stated. He further noted that addressing these threats is crucial for national security interests and economic stability.
Financial sustainability remains a significant concern for the OAS. Rubio pointed out that this responsibility is shared among all member states.
Outgoing Secretary General Luis Almagro was commended by Rubio for his leadership during his tenure. Almagro was recognized for confronting undemocratic influences in countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. "I commend outgoing Secretary General Luis Almagro for his steadfast leadership and defense of democracy," said Rubio.
The emphasis remains on ensuring free elections and safeguarding freedoms consistent with both the founding charter of OAS and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
