Canada has initiated a dispute complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding new US tariff measures. The Canadian government claims that the additional ad valorem duties imposed by the United States—25 percent on all non-energy goods and 10 percent on energy goods originating from Canada—are not in line with various provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994, as well as the WTO's Trade Facilitation Agreement.
The formal process began with Canada's request for consultations, which marks the start of a dispute within the WTO framework. This stage allows both parties to discuss and potentially resolve the issue without advancing to litigation. If no resolution is reached within 60 days, Canada may seek adjudication by a panel.
