The USCGC MIDGETT (WMSL-757), a Legend-class national security cutter, recently docked in Wellington to reinforce the partnership between the United States and New Zealand. Commanded by CAPT Matthew Rooney, the crew participated in activities focused on collaboration, leadership, and maritime security across the Pacific.
During the visit, over 50 cadets from TS Tamatoa, TS Amokura, TS Taupo, No. 2 (Hutt City) Air Squadron, and the Tamatoa Dolphins boarded MIDGETT for an immersive learning experience. The cadets explored engineering and career pathways at sea while listening to stories from three Kiwis who traveled with the ship from Hawaii to Wellington.
The MIDGETT crew also collaborated with New Zealand Police maritime teams to gain insight into local operations. Senior Sergeant Craig Pickering, Sergeant Katy Thompson, and Inspector Jimmy McKay demonstrated maritime dive training and patrol capabilities aboard Lady Elizabeth IV. This interaction highlighted ongoing commitments between U.S. and New Zealand forces for safe Pacific waters.
In addition to security operations, cultural exchanges were part of the visit. The crew engaged in Waka Ama paddling with Toa Waka Ama as part of experiencing New Zealand's maritime traditions. This exchange underscored friendship and cooperation that characterize U.S.-New Zealand relations.
Now continuing their mission in the Pacific, USCGC MIDGETT's stop in Wellington has strengthened ties between both nations as they work together for a peaceful Pacific region.
