There has been a notable rise in spontaneous roadblocks throughout Mozambique, significantly impacting travel. Most of these disruptions are occurring north of Maputo, although southbound routes are also affected.

The roadblocks vary in duration, from minutes to days. While some remain peaceful, others have seen protestors exploiting the situation by charging fees for passage, throwing rocks at vehicles, and committing acts of vandalism and theft. Authorities may use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse crowds and clear roadblocks.

U.S. citizens are advised to reconsider traveling to Mozambique. It is recommended to avoid crowds and demonstrations, exercise caution when traveling outside major cities, not attempt to force through roadblocks, limit travel between sunset and sunrise unless necessary, monitor local media for updates on road conditions, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts.
