The U.S. Embassy in Banjul is inviting scholars to apply for the 2026-27 Fulbright African Research Scholar Program (ARSP). The application deadline is August 1, 2025, and interested candidates can apply online.
The ARSP offers two types of grants: Research Grants and Program and Curriculum Development Grants. Research Grants are available for three to nine months for African university faculty or research institute professionals. These grants allow scholars to conduct research at a U.S. academic or research institution between August 2026 and March 2027. Applicants need a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree, with preference given to those with three years of teaching experience and a strong scholarly record.
Program and Curriculum Development Grants are offered for three to five months. They target African university faculty or administrators who aim to develop new courses, curricula, or programs upon returning home. A master's degree is required, but not a doctorate.
The program accepts applicants from all disciplines regardless of gender or age, although clinical medical research involving patient contact is excluded. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the country they apply from and should hold a valid passport issued by that country.
Applicants need English proficiency sufficient for their projects but do not require TOEFL exams. Medical History and Examination Reports will be requested from successful candidates.
Placement assistance may require additional time if expected by the applicant. Applications should clearly outline research objectives and explain why U.S.-based research is necessary. Scholars must specify which grant category they are applying for; otherwise, they will be assigned one by IIE.
Each application requires three letters of reference; letters of invitation are optional but recommended. Placement requests related to alma maters are discouraged, although institutional preferences will be considered as much as possible.
Laboratory fees are not standard benefits under ARSP but may be awarded on a case-by-case basis if funding permits.
Scholars who have applied unsuccessfully in previous competitions may reapply with revised proposals and updated documents.
