The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has announced that representatives from the Regional Federal Benefits Office will be visiting Guatemala City to provide services related to U.S. Social Security benefits. This visit is scheduled for February 24-28, 2025.

The services will be offered at INGUAT (Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo), located at 7a. Avenida 1-17, Zone 4, First Floor. The schedule is set for Monday through Thursday, February 24-27, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On Friday, February 28, services will be available from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm.

No appointments are necessary for these walk-in services; however, visitors should be prepared for potential waiting times.

For those applying for Social Security benefits, it is essential to bring original documents along with a legible copy of each document required for the service. Applicants must present their birth certificate and passport. If applying for auxiliary or survivor’s benefits, a marriage certificate and/or spouse’s death certificate is also needed.

For Social Security Number Card applications under age twelve, applicants need a copy of their valid U.S. passport and Consular Report of Birth Abroad or original U.S. birth certificate. If registered after age five, form SS-5FS must be completed and the passport signed.

Applicants over age twelve should bring similar documentation as well as proof of residence abroad such as school records or medical records indicating their stay outside the United States.

The Federal Benefits Unit will also accept "proof of life" forms known as Foreign Enforcement Questionnaires (FEQ). These were sent out this year to individuals whose Social Security Numbers end in digits between 00 and 49 with mailing addresses in Guatemala. Failure to return this form by January may result in suspension of benefits starting February.

For assistance or more information about these services, individuals can contact the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City via their website or email the U.S. Citizens Services Navigator. They can also reach out to the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs at specific phone numbers provided depending on location.
