The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade has announced the opening of applications for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for the 2021-22 academic year. This program is open to Serbian citizens and is part of a competitive global initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, with funding from the U.S. Government and support from the Institute of International Education.

Since its inception in 1978, over 6,000 fellows from 162 countries have participated in this program, including 17 Serbians in the last decade. Approximately 150 fellowships will be awarded for the upcoming academic year.

"The Humphrey Fellowship is for those interested in broadening their perspectives, becoming global leaders, and giving back to Serbian society upon their return," stated a representative from the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy.

Candidates must be accomplished mid-career professionals in leadership roles with a commitment to public service and potential for advancement. The program encourages candidates to engage in mutual knowledge exchange with Americans and other international fellows on common issues.

The fellowship offers opportunities for non-degree graduate-level study, leadership development, networking, and professional collaboration through practical work experience in the U.S. Although hosted at American universities, it is a professional exchange program rather than an academic one.

Fields of focus include agricultural and rural development; economic development/finance and banking; natural resources, environmental and climate policy; law and human rights; public policy analysis and administration; trafficking in persons policy and prevention.

Eligibility criteria require Serbian citizenship, a university degree, five years of professional experience by August 2021, limited or no prior U.S. experience, demonstrated leadership qualities, public service record, and English proficiency.

Applications were due by August 15, 2020. Following a technical review process, selected candidates will be interviewed on August 31st. Successful candidates will then take the TOEFL exam if they do not already have valid scores.

Final selections will be announced in Washington D.C., February 2021. The embassy will assist selected candidates with visa applications and necessary paperwork.

The fellowship covers travel costs and stipends but does not provide additional funds for dependents who wish to accompany fellows during their stay in the U.S.

Interested individuals were instructed to apply online before August 15th deadline and send required documents by post to the U.S. Embassy Belgrade's Public Affairs Section.

For further information about this opportunity or assistance with applications, potential applicants can contact PAS via email or phone as detailed on their website.
