The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) has extended its application deadline from February 28, 2021, to March 15, 2021. This program offers scholarships for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, it targets students from underrepresented backgrounds who have not previously studied in the United States.

The scholarship covers international travel, tuition, room and board, medical insurance, books, and provides a small monthly stipend. Participants will engage in full-time undergraduate coursework at their host institution and must enroll in courses related to their major as well as U.S. Studies fields such as history or government. A minimum of twenty hours of community service is also required during the program.

Participants will reside on-campus with American peers and attend orientations both virtually and in-person in Washington, DC. Eligibility requires applicants to be citizens and residents of the country where they apply for the program. They must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program with at least one semester remaining after completing Global UGRAD.

Applicants should demonstrate leadership potential through academics and extracurricular activities and possess strong English language skills; TOEFL exams are necessary for finalists or alternates. Preference is given to those with little experience outside their home countries.

Certain individuals are not eligible: U.S. citizens or permanent residents; those studying or working abroad; employees of U.S missions abroad; and immediate family members of these employees within a year post-employment termination.

Prospective participants should secure academic transcripts and recommendation letters promptly due to restrictions on adding information post-application deadline. More details can be found on the Global UGRAD website or by contacting BelgradeG-UGRAD@state.gov.

For students in clinical fields like medicine or nursing, J-1 visa regulations prohibit direct patient care during their studies in the United States.
