On February 4, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth engaged in an introductory call with Panama’s Minister of Public Security, Frank Alexis Ábrego. The discussion was described as constructive by Department of Defense Spokesman John Ullyot.

During the call, Secretary Hegseth highlighted his primary focus on safeguarding U.S. national security interests under President Trump's leadership. This includes ensuring unrestricted access to the Panama Canal and maintaining it free from foreign interference. Both leaders reaffirmed their countries' commitment to defending the Canal and agreed to enhance cooperation between the U.S. military and Panama's security forces.

Secretary Hegseth expressed gratitude for Panama's efforts in combating transnational organized crime and illegal migration. He also appreciated Panama's willingness to accept third-country migrants from the United States for repatriation to their home countries.

The conversation concluded with both officials agreeing to stay in close communication and plan a face-to-face meeting in the near future.
