The United States is taking steps to maintain its leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) through a new executive order issued by the President. The order aims to eliminate existing policies that hinder AI innovation and establish the U.S. as a global leader in this field.
The purpose of the order is clear: "To maintain this leadership, we must develop AI systems that are free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas." It emphasizes the importance of appropriate government policies to secure America's position in AI development.
The policy outlined in the order states, "It is the policy of the United States to sustain and enhance America’s global AI dominance in order to promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security."
Within 180 days, an action plan will be developed by various presidential advisors and department heads. This plan will aim to achieve the objectives set forth in the policy section of the order.
A significant part of this initiative involves reviewing and potentially revoking previous directives under Executive Order 14110 from October 2023. This review will ensure that any actions inconsistent with current policy are addressed appropriately.
Additionally, within 60 days, revisions will be made to specific Office of Management and Budget memoranda to align them with the new policy direction.
The general provisions clarify that nothing in this order should interfere with existing legal authorities or create enforceable rights against the U.S. government.
This executive move underscores a strategic approach towards fostering an environment conducive to advancing AI technology while maintaining national interests at heart.
