The United States has strongly condemned Iran's recent attack on Israel, which involved over 300 munitions, including ballistic missiles and explosive unmanned aerial vehicles. This statement was made during a UN Security Council meeting addressing the Middle East situation.
According to the U.S., Iran's actions threatened not only Israel but also other regional countries like Jordan and Iraq. The U.S. emphasized that the Security Council must respond to these actions. It accused Iran of violating international legal obligations through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) by arming groups such as Hezbollah and facilitating attacks in the region.
"Iran transferred Shahed one-way attack drones to Russia – the same drones it used in last night’s attacks against Israel," stated the U.S., highlighting a breach of Resolution 2231. The U.S. also mentioned Iran's involvement in seizing commercial ships in international waters, citing an incident on April 12 involving a Portuguese-flagged ship near the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States attributed part of the blame for the current crisis in Gaza to Iranian support for Hamas. It called for collective responsibility among Security Council members to ensure Iran complies with resolutions and stops violating international law.
In response to Iran's actions, "the United States will explore additional measures to hold Iran accountable here at the United Nations." The U.S. urged immediate condemnation from the Security Council and supported Israel's right to self-defense.
"If Iran or its proxies take actions against the United States or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible," warned the U.S., while reiterating that it does not seek escalation and aims for de-escalation through diplomatic efforts and humanitarian assistance.
The statement concluded with a call for securing an end to conflict in Gaza through a ceasefire and increased aid for Palestinians.
