Today, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Representative to the United Nations, held a meeting with Shin Won-sik, the Republic of Korea's Minister of National Defense. This meeting highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and South Korea in their efforts to promote peace and security in the region.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield praised South Korea for its commitment and significant contributions to UN peacekeeping operations. They stressed the need to address North Korea's weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile advancements at the UN. The goal is to achieve complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establish lasting peace.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing military exchanges and joint exercises to strengthen regional security and stability. The discussions also included building upon the historic Trilateral Leaders’ Summit held at Camp David in August 2023. This aims to further U.S.-ROK-Japan trilateral cooperation on issues such as Women, Peace, and Security.
Furthermore, they highlighted South Korea’s upcoming presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a key opportunity for demonstrating global leadership in addressing urgent security challenges.
