Sarah Sewall, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, has commenced her first visit to Cairo. "The United States has long enjoyed a broad partnership with Egypt," Sewall stated, expressing her anticipation to understand more about Egypt's challenges and progress.
During her four-day visit, Sewall plans to engage with government officials, religious figures, and civil society leaders. Her discussions will focus on cooperation in countering extremism and terrorism, ensuring individual rights and freedoms, promoting women's advancement, and protecting refugees.
Appointed as Under Secretary of State in 2014, Dr. Sewall has been an advocate for advancing civilian security and human rights globally. Before this role, she taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy and directed the Program on National Security and Human Rights. She also served in the U.S. Department of Defense as Assistant Secretary for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance.
