Today, the first shipment of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from the United States arrived at the port of Alexandria for delivery to the Egyptian military. These heavily armored vehicles are designed to protect soldiers from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), landmines, and other attacks. This marks the initial batch of a total of 762 MRAP vehicles that will be transferred to Egypt. The new equipment aims to combat terrorism and promote stability in the region.
Originally developed for U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, MRAPs provide enhanced protection levels for soldiers and have been proven to save lives. Major General Charles Hooper, the U.S. Embassy Senior Defense Official in Cairo, stated, “The delivery of these MRAPs to Egypt provides a crucial capability needed during these times of regional instability and is part of the continuing strong relationship between the U.S. and Egypt.”
This transfer is part of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Excess Defense Articles grant program, which allows vehicles to be transferred at no cost to the Government of Egypt. This delivery represents another step by the U.S. government in supporting Egypt's fight against terrorism as part of broader military cooperation initiatives between both countries.
