Today, President Joe Biden announced a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. After months of diplomatic efforts by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, a ceasefire and hostage deal has been reached. This agreement aims to stop the fighting in Gaza, provide humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians, and reunite hostages with their families after more than 15 months of captivity.
President Biden highlighted that he had outlined this plan on May 31, 2024, which was later unanimously endorsed by the UN Security Council. He attributed the success of this agreement to several factors: the pressure on Hamas, regional changes following a ceasefire in Lebanon, Iran's weakened position, and persistent American diplomacy.
Reflecting on recent events, President Biden acknowledged the families affected by Hamas's attack on October 7th and those who suffered losses during the ensuing conflict. "It is long past time for the fighting to end and the work of building peace and security to begin," he stated. He also expressed concern for American families involved—three have living hostages in Gaza while four await return of remains—and emphasized determination to bring them all home under this deal.
