U.S. Marine Corps General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Major Michael Woods visited Benin from May 1-3, 2024. This visit marks General Langley's first trip to Benin since assuming command and represents a significant step in the bilateral relations between the United States and Benin.
The visit emphasized the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen democratic institutions, respect human rights, and promote prosperity for the people of Benin. U.S. Ambassador to Benin Brian Shukan highlighted this partnership by stating, “General Langley’s visit underscores our diverse expanding partnership to help the Beninese people by our joint efforts to defend against violent extremism and to promote economic development.”
During his visit, General Langley engaged in discussions with senior civilian and military leaders in Benin, including President Patrice Talon and Chief of Defense Staff Major General Fructueux Gbaguidi. These talks focused on collaboration in addressing security challenges and advancing mutual interests. "Benin holds a strategic position in West Africa," said General Langley, "and our partnership with the Benin defense forces is crucial in countering violent extremism and promoting stability in the region."
The U.S.-Benin partnership dates back over six decades to 1960 when diplomatic relations were established. The United States continues its support for Benin's efforts toward democracy, security enhancement, and citizen prosperity. General Langley reiterated this commitment: “The U.S. values its longstanding relationship with Benin... We are proud to support Benin in its endeavors to strengthen democratic institutions.”
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the partnership between Benin’s military and North Dakota National Guard. This collaboration has facilitated exchanges that enhance interoperability and capacity building through joint exercises and cultural exchanges.
U.S. Africa Command is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, as one of eleven combatant commands under the U.S. Department of Defense tasked with command control over military forces during peace or war times.
