As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, finding effective ways to support its people becomes increasingly difficult. The challenges are compounded by Hamas's role in the region, as highlighted by Jason Dov Greenblatt, Assistant to the President and Special Representative for International Negotiations.

A recent article in The New York Times titled "Plan to Storm Fence Gets Bloody Preview in Gaza" by Iyad Abuheweila and David Halbfinger sheds light on the complex realities faced by Gazans. The report details Israeli concerns about mass protests at the border, with an Israeli colonel noting that protestors aim "to infiltrate into Israel, damage our infrastructure and kill Israelis." Hamas leader Ismail Radwan has reportedly encouraged protestors to embrace martyrdom.

In contrast, an op-ed by Abu Shammalah in The New York Times titled "Why I March in Gaza" presents a personal perspective. While it portrays a father cherishing his family amidst the turmoil, it also describes protestors as unarmed—a claim contradicted by reports of violence during demonstrations.

The blame for Gaza's dire state is often directed at Israel, Egypt, or the Palestinian Authority. However, Greenblatt emphasizes that Hamas bears significant responsibility due to its governance over the past decade. He argues that Hamas prioritizes its destructive agenda over the welfare of Gaza's population.

Israel has expressed willingness to aid Gazans if assurances can be made that resources won't be diverted for hostile purposes. Similarly, Egypt shares security concerns with Israel but could potentially offer more assistance under certain conditions. Meanwhile, President Abbas and the Palestinian Authority face their own challenges but could play a role in improving conditions if circumstances allow.

Donor fatigue is evident among those attempting to assist Gaza. Despite temporary solutions being proposed, substantial change remains elusive under current conditions. Greenblatt notes that while he has encountered many resilient individuals from Gaza during his tenure, there are limits to what can be achieved while Hamas remains in control.

Greenblatt concludes that Palestinians in Gaza should reunite with their West Bank counterparts under a unified Palestinian Authority leadership for a brighter future. He echoes Abu Shammalah's desire for his children’s future—a chance "to thrive."
