On the 25th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed the United States' dedication to upholding a free press. He emphasized its importance as a fundamental element of democracy.
"The United States values freedom of the press as a key component of democratic governance," Pompeo stated. He highlighted that a free press contributes to an informed and active citizenry, which can more effectively participate in political decision-making and hold governments accountable.
Pompeo also paid tribute to journalists worldwide who have committed themselves to transparency and accountability, often facing significant risks in their line of work. "Today, we honor the many journalists and media actors who have dedicated their lives, often at great risk, to promote transparency and accountability throughout the world," he said.
