The Ecuador Habla Inglés (EHI) program, sponsored by the United States Government, is making strides in enhancing English language skills among public school teachers in Ecuador. Since its inception in 2020, the program has benefited over 2,400 teachers across the country.
Initially launched in two provinces with 212 participating teachers, EHI expanded significantly by 2021 to include 1,453 educators. By 2022, it had reached a total of 2,045 teachers. The initiative is implemented in cooperation with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education and executed by EIL Ecuador, a non-governmental organization.
A survey conducted by the U.S. Government among EHI participants highlighted that "98% of the teachers reported that the program taught them new approaches to teaching English." This includes improved understanding and application of teaching techniques and fostering a more collaborative classroom environment.
Teachers like Alexandra Solís from Mitad del Mundo Educational Unit in Quito express appreciation for the program's impact. She stated: “The most valuable aspect is that they provide us with courses in the language we work with. Now I feel more confident, more secure when I teach my classes.”
Monica Brito, another participant for three years, noted significant changes: “The content is tailored to the reality we live in. With EHI, I have developed more confidence and motivation. Thanks to the program, my English has improved substantially.”
EHI's influence extends beyond teachers to their students as well. The program estimates each trained teacher impacts about 200 students annually. So far, nearly 460,000 students have benefited from EHI-trained educators.
Students have reported positive outcomes from their involvement with EHI-trained teachers; "80%" felt more confident using English and "84%" were more motivated to learn it. Furthermore, "89% of their students perceive an improvement in their teachers’ English teaching skills."
The ability to speak English offers various advantages for both educators and students alike—access to educational resources and materials improves teaching practices while preparing students for future academic pursuits abroad and increasing job opportunities globally.
