President Donald J. Trump has expressed his commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with Egypt and promoting stability in the Middle East. During a meeting with President El-Sisi, Trump stated, “It’s a great honor to be with President El-Sisi, a friend—a great friend—of Egypt. And we have very special things happening. Our relationship has never been stronger. And we’re working with Egypt on many different fronts, including military and trade.”
The United States and Egypt have long-standing ties that carry significant security and economic implications. This marks President El-Sisi's second visit to the White House since 2017, underscoring the strategic importance of the relationship between the two nations.
Since the signing of the 1979 Egypt–Israel Treaty of Peace, the U.S. has provided substantial support to Egypt, amounting to over $40 billion in military assistance and $30 billion in economic aid. This support has been pivotal in establishing Egypt as a stable force in the region.
President Trump is focused on enhancing regional stability by collaborating with Egypt on issues such as conflicts in Libya, Syria, and Yemen, as well as progress on the Middle East Strategic Alliance. The U.S. continues to provide military training and equipment to aid Egypt's counterterrorism efforts.
The Trump Administration also acknowledges Egypt's efforts towards female economic empowerment and religious freedom while supporting its ambitious economic reform program aimed at achieving long-term stability.
In terms of trade relations, President Trump aims to strengthen the already robust trade ties between America and Egypt. In 2018, the U.S. had a goods trade surplus with Egypt of $2.6 billion, marking a 9.3 percent increase from 2017. Exports from the U.S. to Egypt reached $5.1 billion in 2018, reflecting a 26.7 percent rise from the previous year.
Both countries are working together to promote fair trade practices and enhance investment by addressing various issues such as market access and intellectual property protection.
