On March 22, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo will be illuminated in blue to mark World Water Day. This initiative aims to emphasize the collaboration between the United States and Egypt in addressing global water scarcity.
World Water Day has been observed annually on March 22 since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in 1993, highlighting the importance of sustainable freshwater resource management.
The Nile River plays a crucial role in Egypt's history and current economy, providing 97 percent of the country's natural water resources. It supports agriculture and industry vital for food security and economic development, with 95 percent of Egypt's population living near its banks.
This year's theme for World Water Day is "Leaving No One Behind." The United States envisions a world where everyone has access to clean and safe water. Over four decades, the U.S. has invested over $3.5 billion with Egypt's government to improve drinking water and sanitation services across the country. Current USAID projects are focused on expanding these services in Upper Egypt and North Sinai while supporting efforts to enhance service quality and sustainability.
