Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed various issues during an interview with Amal Roushdy of Egyptian State Television on January 11, 2019. During his visit to Cairo, Pompeo emphasized the productive nature of discussions held between the United States and Egypt. "We talked about a range of issues, about economic growth and prosperity here in Cairo and in greater Egypt as well as security issues in the region," he stated.
Pompeo highlighted ongoing support for Egypt's counterterrorism efforts and American business involvement. He mentioned that these initiatives would continue to develop over time. Additionally, he described his visit to a cathedral and mosque as significant, noting they serve as "beacons of religious freedom" in the Middle East.
On military assistance to Egypt, Pompeo acknowledged ongoing challenges posed by extremism and emphasized cooperation with regional partners to address threats from groups like Daesh and Iran. He also touched upon the issue of designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, stating it is under constant review by the U.S.
Addressing concerns about funding for terrorist groups, Pompeo affirmed that cutting off financial support is a priority for the U.S., which has imposed extensive sanctions on Iran. "Whether that terror finance stems from Qatar, from Saudi Arabia, from the Emirates, from Egypt... we are diligent," he remarked.
Regarding U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria, Pompeo assured that it would be conducted orderly while maintaining security for allies who fought against ISIS. He expressed commitment to continuing counter-ISIS efforts globally.
Pompeo also discussed President Trump's peace plan for Israel and Palestine, asserting that ongoing consultations aim to achieve long-term resolution despite challenges such as funding cuts to UNRWA and closing the Palestinian mission in Washington.
In response to Russia's call for an international peace conference involving Fatah and Hamas reconciliation, Pompeo expressed uncertainty about U.S. participation but reiterated America's leadership role in promoting stability in the region.
