Massimiliano Paolucci, the World Bank Country Manager for Kosovo and North Macedonia, expressed optimism for Kosovo's future in a recent op-ed. Reflecting on the country's progress, he noted significant achievements such as poverty reduction and economic growth since joining the World Bank Group.
"Kosovo has shown resilience in the face of global economic uncertainties," Paolucci stated, highlighting improvements in the business climate and foreign investment. He pointed out that income per capita has increased by nearly 50% since 2008, with poverty reduced by 35%.
Paolucci emphasized the importance of continued reforms and strategic investments to sustain growth. "Kosovo can benefit by investing in its people, addressing infrastructure bottlenecks... improving the efficiency of public administration," he suggested.
The World Bank has been a partner to Kosovo for almost three decades, supporting projects in digital connectivity, water management, energy efficiency, and human capital development. These initiatives align with Kosovo's development priorities and EU integration ambitions.
Paolucci stressed the potential of Kosovo's young population but acknowledged challenges in education that need addressing. "The current education system... still falls short in equipping young people with the skills needed," he observed.
Looking forward to 2025, Paolucci expressed hope for further economic growth and prosperity. "With the right policies and a committed effort from both government institutions and the private sector, Kosovo can realize its potential," he concluded.
