The World Bank has approved a new project aimed at enhancing digital services and improving digital skills in Tajikistan, with a focus on rural areas. The initiative seeks to improve the delivery of digitally-enabled public services and boost digital literacy to foster an inclusive economy.
Named the Tajikistan Digital Foundations Project, it involves total funding of $39 million. This includes an International Development Association (IDA) grant of $30 million and an initial $9 million grant from the Government of Switzerland.
"This project represents a significant step towards advancing the digital economy in Tajikistan," said Ozan Sevimli, World Bank Group Country Manager for Tajikistan. "By enhancing digital services and skills, it aims to foster innovation, improve connectivity, and empower communities. The initiative intends to address the digital divide and generate new opportunities for everyone, including the private sector."
The project will benefit citizens, businesses, and government by improving the quality, accessibility, and transparency of public services. More than 28,000 individuals are expected to gain digital skills through this initiative. Of these individuals, 2,000 will participate in advanced courses designed to enhance job prospects. Additionally, broadband connectivity will be extended to at least 100 schools and nearby public entities to improve learning environments in rural areas.
Businesses stand to gain from a safer legal framework that enhances trust in digital transactions as well as improved government-to-business (G2B) services and platforms. The project also aims to expand school connectivity by providing catalytic public funding while encouraging private capital investment in currently unconnected areas.
Supported by the Government of Switzerland, the project will be implemented with partners such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UNICEF. The Project Implementation Center under the Executive Office of the President will lead implementation efforts along with several key stakeholders including AIDT, NBT, SUE SC among others.
This effort highlights the World Bank's commitment to promoting digital transformation in Tajikistan with hopes of building a more inclusive future through enhanced connectivity.
