KfW IPEX-Bank and NORD/LB are jointly providing approximately EUR 122 million to Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv) for the acquisition of new trams. KfW IPEX-Bank is leading the syndicate, while NORD/LB serves as the account bank. Additionally, the European Investment Bank (EIB) is contributing with a long-term loan. The total investment, including optional vehicles and price adjustments, exceeds EUR 400 million.
The financing will facilitate the purchase of 34 new trams. This follows an option from a 2018 tram order also financed by KfW IPEX-Bank and NORD/LB for 80 similar trams. Part of the loan will also prefinance public grants.
The Czech manufacturer Skoda Transportation will supply these new trams, which can operate in double traction and measure up to 60 meters in length. They will be used in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and Heidelberg's public transport systems. These "Rhein-Neckar-Tram" (RNT) vehicles aim to enhance transport capacity with accessible low-floor designs, passenger information systems, and energy-efficient air conditioning.
Aida Welker from KfW IPEX-Bank stated: “We're delighted to be supporting our long-standing customer rnv once again and, in so doing, strengthening public transport in Germany.” Heiko Ludwig from NORD/LB added: “We're really pleased to be able to support this sustainable project.”
Christian Volz of rnv highlighted: “The procurement of RNT is the largest investment in the history of our company... With KfW IPEX-Bank and NORD/LB, we have exactly the right partners on board.”
This initiative by KfW IPEX-Bank and NORD/LB supports decarbonizing mobility and advancing Germany's transport turnaround.
