The second session of the Joint Solutions Lab, titled "Empowering Women-led MSMEs: Unlocking Growth through Intellectual Property," took place on November 18, 2024. The event aimed to foster discussions around enhancing the role of women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in international trade through effective intellectual property (IP) management.
The session was opened with remarks from a representative speaking on behalf of Director-General Okonjo-Iweala. The speaker welcomed WIPO Assistant Director General Marco Alemán and other participants who joined both in-person and virtually.
Joint Solutions Lab sessions are designed to facilitate focused conversations that aim to increase awareness and develop practical solutions for challenges faced by businesses. The primary goal is to make trade more inclusive by encouraging the participation of MSMEs, especially those led by women.
"WTO rules are the foundation to create a fertile ecosystem where female entrepreneurs can thrive," stated the speaker. They emphasized that intellectual property plays a significant role in daily life through goods and services. For many small businesses, knowledge is their main asset, and numerous women have developed creative solutions that benefit their families and communities.
However, it was noted that surveys indicate MSMEs face difficulties with IP protection due to costs, complexity, or lack of awareness. Addressing these issues could provide new opportunities for women entrepreneurs and promote inclusive economic growth.
Rebecca Osewa, a woman entrepreneur, was also present at the session to share her firsthand experience. She discussed how IP management supports her business and highlighted real-world factors impacting its effective use. Her insights were intended to help craft practical solutions beneficial for women entrepreneurs.
Acknowledgments were extended to Ambassador Wilson for his leadership and the teams from WIPO and WTO for realizing his vision into this event. The representative concluded by expressing hope for fruitful discussions during the lab session.
